Ha Long Bay Day Trip, Overnight Cruise, or Cat Ba Tour: Which Should You Choose?

by John Buckley
June 8, 2025

Trying to decide between a Ha Long Bay day trip vs overnight cruise, or whether Cat Ba Island makes more sense? I’ve done both tour styles and nearly booked Cat Ba, and this breakdown compares the real differences in time, cost, and overall experience.

Quick heads up: This post may contain affiliate links to gear, hotels, flights, or experiences I’ve used — or genuinely recommend. If you book through one, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Full disclosure here.

I’ve done two of the three main ways people experience Ha Long Bay: an overnight cruise back in 2018 and a day trip from Hanoi in 2024. I also came very close to booking Cat Ba instead, which gave me a good look at how that option stacks up too.

If you’re basing yourself in Hanoi, like most travelers, the choice usually comes down to time, budget, and how much you actually want to be on the water. Some tours look great on paper but feel rushed, while others sound luxurious and end up feeling unnecessary.

Below, I’ll walk through what each option is really like, what I enjoyed, what I would skip next time, and which one I’d personally choose depending on the kind of trip I was planning.

🛏 Hanoi as Your Launchpad

If you’re booking a Ha Long Bay tour, you’ll almost certainly be starting in Hanoi, and where you stay can make those early mornings much easier or much worse. Pickup times are often early, sometimes as early as 6:30 a.m., so staying somewhere central helps avoid unnecessary stress.

For most travelers, the Old Quarter makes the most sense. It’s compact, walkable, and packed with hotels, cafes, and tour offices. You’re close to pickup points, and when you get back from a long day on the water, you’re already where you want to be.

It’s also one of the most atmospheric parts of the city. The Old Quarter is a maze of narrow streets filled with street food, tiny shops, and constant motion. Ta Hien Beer Street is right in the middle of it all. I had already quit drinking by my second visit, but on my first trip I definitely experienced it properly. Even sober, it’s a great place for people-watching and soaking up the energy.

On my most recent trip, I stayed at the Hanoi Allure Hotel in the Old Quarter. The location was great for exploring on foot and worked well for early tour pickups. The rooms were small, which is pretty standard for the Old Quarter, but they were clean, modern, and far more comfortable than a cheaper hotel we tried later after returning from Sapa to save a few bucks.

Don’t get cute. If you find a place that works, stick with it. Lesson learned.

🚤 Tour Comparison at a Glance

If you just want the short version, here’s how the three options compare at a glance. I’ll break each one down in more detail below.

Tour Option Best For Duration Cost (est.) My Experience Book It
🛥️ Ha Long Bay Day Tour (2024) Tight schedule, casual travelers 12–13 hrs $45–$75 ✅ Took via Klook’s Cozy Bay Cruise My Pick: Cozy Bay Cruise Tour
All Options: Browse Ha Long Bay Tours
🌅 Ha Long Bay Overnight Cruise (2018) Couples, slower pace, photography 2D1N $120–$250+ ✅ Took similar cruise solo Book Aspira Cruise
🌿 Cat Ba + Lan Ha Bay (Future Pick) Quieter vibe, more active travelers 1–2 days $100–$200 ❌ Didn’t get to go — next time! 2-Day: Cat Ba + Lan Ha Bay Tour
1-Day: Day Trip from Hanoi

🛥️ Cozy Bay Day Cruise via Klook

This is the option I chose with my wife in early 2024. We wanted something efficient and budget-friendly without missing out on the classic Ha Long Bay scenery. Cozy Bay’s day cruise via Klook consistently came up as one of the better-reviewed options, and overall, it delivered.

We booked this as a short detour before heading north to Sapa for our main adventure. My wife had never seen Ha Long Bay, and I’d already done an overnight cruise back in 2018. We didn’t feel the need to spend more time in Hanoi, so a one-day tour made sense and still gave us a chance to rest before the long minivan ride to Sapa the next day.

👉 Also heading to Sapa? Here’s exactly how we got from Hanoi to Sapa, plus a breakdown of the three main transportation options: How to Get from Hanoi to Sapa

Booking the Cozy Bay tour through Klook was easy, with clear and helpful English-language communication right from the start. In the past, I’ve booked tours through street-level agencies in the Old Quarter, and let’s just say times have changed. It’s now much quicker, easier, and potentially safer to book directly from your hotel room.

A representative followed up quickly with pickup details, and we were picked up right in front of the Hanoi Allure Hotel. Everything ran on time. Our guide, Binh, was a highlight. He spoke excellent English, had great energy, and kept the group engaged from the moment we boarded the bus.

The group was mostly Indian travelers, which led to an unexpectedly fun sunset ride back. Bollywood music, dancing on the top deck, and Binh fully leaning into the moment. It was loud, chaotic, and a lot more fun than we expected. I’ve got video proof (see below).

Once we were on the boat, the views were exactly what I remembered from 2018. Jagged limestone karsts in every direction, calm water, and perfect weather. The included buffet lunch was better than expected, but the real highlight was the kayaking stop.

We spent about an hour paddling through a low cave into a wide, quiet bay surrounded by cliffs. Yes, it’s touristy, but not so much that it ruins the experience. If kayaking isn’t your thing, there’s also a rowboat option run by locals that follows the same route.

Kayaking through the cliffs was easily the highlight of the Cozy Bay day cruise. Scenic, calm, and Instagram-worthy shots.

There were a few downsides. A mid-morning stop at a textile factory felt like a thinly disguised shopping break. Not my thing, though some people enjoyed it.

Sung Sot Cave was another mixed bag. The cave itself is impressive, but it was packed, and we shuffled through in humid, sweaty conditions with several other tour groups. Ti Top Island was similar. Crowded and not especially memorable, but it was nice to jump in the water before heading back.

Cooling off at Ti Top Island. Busy, but a decent way to end the day with a quick swim.

Still, for under $40 USD, it was a great day overall. Pickup was around 6:30 a.m., and we were back in Hanoi by about 8 p.m. The views, kayaking, lunch, and group vibe easily outweighed the drawbacks. If you’re short on time or want a straightforward introduction to Ha Long Bay without committing to an overnight cruise, this tour does the job well.

🎉 Rooftop Bollywood Dance Party

We didn’t see this coming, but the sunset ride back turned into a rooftop Bollywood dance party thanks to Binh and the energy of the group. Bollywood music, dancing on the top deck, and zero self-consciousness. Loud, chaotic, and a lot of fun.

My travel plans for 2026 include skiing in Kashmir and then heading to the beaches of Goa. I’ll probably need to rewatch this video and brush up on a few moves before then.

🌅 Overnight Cruise on Ha Long Bay

Looking back, I probably should’ve flipped my itinerary. I did the luxury overnight cruise solo in 2018 and the budget-friendly day tour years later with my wife.

The overnight experience itself was excellent, but the boat was packed with couples…and solo Johnny here.

Slower pace, better food, and a private cabin. The overnight cruise delivers if you’ve got the time, and ideally a partner.

Everyone onboard was friendly and welcoming, but there’s no getting around the slight awkwardness of dining alone on a boat clearly designed for romance. While most tables were set for two, I had a table for one and a lot of attention from the wait staff.

That said, it was still a memorable experience. Everything included on the Cozy Bay day tour, kayaking, cave visits, and a beach stop, was also part of the overnight cruise.

We also visited a local pearl farm, which was scenic and interesting, even if I wasn’t exactly shopping for jewelry. The real difference was pacing. Instead of rushing from stop to stop, there were long stretches of slow sailing through the karsts, with time to lounge on the top deck, nap, or read in my cabin as limestone cliffs drifted past. It was quiet, scenic, and almost meditative.

Excellent food, even if I had a table for one every night. Luxury definitely feels better with company.

Would I recommend an overnight cruise? Absolutely, especially for couples. The meals were excellent, the cabins felt more like boutique hotel rooms than a boat, and waking up on the bay was genuinely special.

But as a solo traveler, especially over Tet when much of Hanoi was shut down, it felt a bit over-the-top for one person. If I had more time or someone to share it with, I’d happily do it again. If not, I’d stick with a day tour.

🌿 Cat Ba Island + Lan Ha Bay Tour

On our most recent trip in 2024, Cat Ba Island seriously tempted us. Since I’d already done Ha Long Bay before, I was eager to try something different, and Cat Ba kept coming up as a quieter, more local-feeling alternative. From everything I read and the tours I bookmarked, it seemed especially appealing for travelers who want to mix a boat trip with a bit of hiking and jungle scenery.

In the end, we couldn’t make it work logistically. Many of the better Cat Ba itineraries involve an overnight stay, either on the island itself or on a boat cruising through Lan Ha Bay, and we already had our Sapa itinerary locked in. If I had more time, or padded the schedule a bit better, Cat Ba is the option I probably would have chosen instead of repeating Ha Long Bay.

That said, I spent a lot of time researching it. Compared to Ha Long, Lan Ha Bay looks nearly identical in terms of limestone karsts and calm water, but with fewer boats and less crowding. For travelers who’ve already done Ha Long Bay, or who want something that feels more relaxed and a little less polished, Cat Ba makes a lot of sense. If I were planning this trip again with a two-day window, this is the alternative I’d book.

🧭 How to Choose the Right Ha Long Bay Tour

If you’re torn between a one-day cruise, an overnight option, or something a bit different like Cat Ba Island, you’re not alone. I’ve done two of these and seriously considered the third, so this is how I’d think about the decision based on time, budget, and travel style.

🎒 Just want to check the box? Go with a day trip.

You’ll be up early and back late, but a solid day tour like Cozy Bay covers the essentials. Scenic views, kayaking, cave visits, and a buffet lunch, all for around $40. If your time in Vietnam is limited or you’re pairing this with other stops like Sapa, the day trip makes the most sense.

💑 Traveling as a couple? The overnight cruise is made for you.

If you have the time and want to slow things down, an overnight cruise offers a more relaxed and romantic experience. Think private cabins, multi-course meals, sunset views from the deck, and a much gentler pace. I wouldn’t recommend it for solo travelers (learned that one the hard way), but for couples, it’s a great option.

🌿 Want fewer crowds and something more active? Cat Ba is your move.

If this isn’t your first time in the area, or you’d rather step slightly off the main tourist route, Cat Ba and Lan Ha Bay offer a quieter, more nature-forward experience. Expect kayaking, some light jungle hiking, and a more local island feel. You’ll want at least two days to do it properly.

✅ Quick Pros and Cons Comparison

Here’s a simple side-by-side look at the main pros and cons of each option to help you compare them at a glance.

Tour Type Pros Cons
Day Tour Cheap, efficient, easy to book Crowded, rushed, long bus ride and late return
Overnight Cruise Scenic, slower pace, private cabin Costs more, takes 2 days
Cat Ba Tour Less crowded, active, authentic vibe More transfers, requires overnight

❓ Ha Long Bay Tour FAQs

Is a day trip to Ha Long Bay worth it?

Yes — if you’re short on time, a day trip gives you the essential Ha Long Bay experience: cruising through limestone karsts, kayaking, cave visits, and a decent lunch. It’s fast-paced, but well worth it for first-timers or travelers on a tighter itinerary.

What’s the difference between Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay?

Both offer stunning scenery, but Lan Ha Bay (near Cat Ba Island) is generally less crowded and slightly more rugged. You’ll still see limestone karsts and calm water, but with fewer tour boats and a more local vibe.

Should I book my Ha Long Bay tour in advance?

Yes — especially during high season (Nov–April) or if you’re booking a specific cruise like Cozy Bay or Aspira. Most tours include hotel pickup, and booking ahead ensures a smoother experience and better communication with the operator.

Can you do Cat Ba Island as a day trip from Hanoi?

Technically, yes — but it’s a long day and the logistics can be tricky. Most travelers get more out of Cat Ba by staying at least one night, either on the island or as part of a 2-day Lan Ha Bay cruise.

Which Ha Long Bay tour is best for couples?

The overnight cruise wins here. You’ll get a private cabin, slower pace, better meals, and more time to enjoy the scenery without rushing. It’s a great option if you’re not on a tight schedule.
